Hello, two of my academic goals would be to simply get through NCEA level 1 and complete each course on at least Merit or Excellence. my personal goal is to improve my communication skills to relate more with others.
According to the NZQA site, I need 80 credits in order to pass level one including 60 credits at any level and 20 credit that are numeracy and literacy. I need 10 Literacy and 10 Numeracy credits. I am going to learn more about endorsements and set goals later in the year.
In my STEM class, we’ve been designing rovers and making cardboard versions.
So far we’ve made complete trash but I’m sure we can make them work eventually.
The work in our history class is relatively controversial, contrary to popular belief of total war.
Our task in question is to study events in history around world war II and describe it in any writing style and convince the rest of the class that your event is the most important.
Bio chemistry is an interesting one.
Nothing special has been going on so far but the work is a solid standered starting point.
At the moment its all about microbes and their functions, a good introduction to a very complicated subject.
Below is my reading response to the text ‘it used to be green once’.
In the story “it used to be green once”, the main focus is on the mother, her frugalness and her embarrassing antics that her children are uncomfortable with.
Based on the way the story is read, I can tell that this story is being narrated by an older or middle child of the family based on the way she refers to herself and others throughout the text.
One of the lines that confirms her gender is when she says “The boys didn’t like having to walk home but us girls didn’t mind”.
I find it interesting that the story comes from a girls perspective and according to a few sites online girls are typically more perceptive of colors around them so it gives more edge to their attention to detail.
The mother who is spoken about a lot in the text is of course frugal and embarrassing for her own kids.
Some instances of her frugalness are like how she cuts up an adult sized swimming gear to give to two of her kids to cut costs on swimming clothes.
Another instance of this is the rotten pairs they bought, cutting out the rotten bits to give the fresher fruit and saving more on fruits.
There are a great many things the mother does that are basically not normal but are done so much that it’s basically burned into her brain, some of these behaviors being particularly hard for her kids to swallow.
My favorite part of the text is when their father gets rich because I find this to be the case everytime my parents win big on their gambling.
Although they weren’t “rich” in a materialistic sense, they did have very loving parent’s who did whatever it takes to make ends meet.
Overall I find this story completely relatable, especially being embarrassed by your parents.
Something you can learn from this text is how much work it takes to keep a whole family together especially if you’re a poor one, the mother is trying her best and that should count for everything.
Thanks for reading – Nga mihi
